Three immunizations were available to eligible retirees and their family members with a valid DoD ID card during Fort Campbell's Soldiers and Families for Life Appreciation Week's final day, Sept. 24, culminating the week-long activities. In addition to providing the shingles, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines at the Soldier Support Center, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Blanchfield Army Community Hospital's medical team talked one-on-one with retirees and their families about how to make healthy choices.
"We offered the injectable influenza vaccine this flu season with the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommending not using intranasal influenza vaccine (LAIV4/Flumist)," said Sgt. 1st Justin Saunto, Blanchfield Army Community Hospital noncommissioned officer in charge of the health fair.
The draw for many attending the Soldiers and Families for Life Appreciation Week activities is the availability of vaccines and medical information offered.
Brian Wichern, who retired after 23 years of service in 2007 participated in this year's Soldiers and Families for Life Appreciation Week.
Wichern said his wife wanted to get her immunizations up to date.
Another retiree, Joseph Oliver, attended for the seminars and medical care but took the opportunity to control two of the bomb disposal robots offered by the 723rd Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company, 184th Ordnance Battalion, 52nd Ordnance Group, who was teaching participants how to operate the disposal robots.
Seeing his efforts for organizing this year's health fair pay off, Saunto enjoyed talking with retirees and their families this year.
"We were honored to provide this annual offering to our treasured Retirees and their family members. They have led the way for Soldiers and families serving the country today and we are grateful for their service and sacrifices. This is one small way we can show our appreciation to them," said Saunto.
