FORT SILL, Okla., Oct. 21, 2016 -- It's that time of year to check to see if you have had your annual mammogram this year.
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the staff at Reynolds Army Community Hospital (RACH) is excited for the opportunity to increase awareness regarding screening mammography and breast health. The hospital's breast imaging department will offer Saturday appointments for screening mammograms during October, in addition to normal weekday hours to ensure everyone has an opportunity to obtain their annual mammogram.
With the ongoing transition of RACH to an Army Health Clinic, it is important to remember that Reynolds is increasing the range and scope of many of our continuing services. The radiology department has been undergoing renovations over several months with a scheduled completion later this year.
"We have been striving to get our wait times down over the past year and now have some of the lowest wait times in all of MEDCOM," said Maj. David Leitman chief of Reynolds radiology department.
"Our goal with all of these changes and new programs is to make your experience as worthwhile, comfortable and efficient as possible.
The radiology chief added Reynolds is well into its construction of a new Comprehensive Breast Imaging Center (CBIC).
The new facility will offer a comfortable, private atmosphere with new mammography, ultrasound and stereotactic equipment. In addition to the mammography services currently offered, the new center will include bone densitometry, which screens patients for low bone density. Once identified patients with low bone density will be offered appropriate treatment to reduce the risk of fractures. The new facility will have suites for those patients having procedures done.
The major added in addition to providing modern breast imaging equipment, the CBIC staff will focus on maximizing the comfort of the patients in their care.
Leitman reiterated that during the renovation and construction the radiology department is fully operational, and patients will not experience any disruption or delay in the care and procedures they normally receive.
In addition to the Saturday appointment the radiology department will also post short videos highlighting breast imaging services offered at RACH throughout October on the Reynolds Facebook page.
"Last week the radiology department hosted a breast cancer awareness luncheon at the hospital," said Leitman. "We had a great turnout with over 90 people from all over the community in attendance.
The highlight of the luncheon was a speech from a breast cancer survivor who was treated at Reynolds and was very happy with her care at the facility."
