FORT RUCKER, Ala. -- U.S. Army Sustainment Command safety professionals from around the globe attended a safety training and strategic planning session at the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center, here recently.

Army Sustainment Command, in a collaborative effort with USACRC, hosted the two-week event for ASC safety professionals in effort to provide them with safety subject matter expertise and give them insight of the Army's current and future safety initiatives.

James Coffman, ASC deputy chief of staff, G-4 (Logistics), spoke to the group about the history and future of the command. He also stressed the importance of technical proficiency, continued individual growth and professional development and laid the groundwork for the strategic planning sessions that followed.

"What we're doing here is all about readiness, vision, and how our safety professionals synchronize their efforts across a global command to achieve momentum in the safety program," he said. "The Army Materiel Command and the Army Sustainment Command leadership clearly demonstrated their commitment and made a significant investment in the safety program by sponsoring this event."

A majority of the participants joined ASC within the past year because of 25 newly created safety authorizations provided by AMC. These positions provide comprehensive safety oversight of the command's 76 Logistics Readiness Centers.

During the 12-day event, participants completed an array of training including targeted Career Program--12 Safety training, advanced Ammunition and Explosives Safety Management workshops, Occupational Safety and Health Administration Disaster Preparedness training, and the OSHA 501 Train-the-Trainer course.

The Explosives Safety Management and Explosives Safety Deviation Approval and Risk Acceptance Document workshops prepared participants for their CP-12 Level II certifications in Explosives Safety and offered protocols for overseeing ASC's 37 ammunition supply points.

They also completed a weekend training event to prepare them for the Associate and Certified Safety Professional examinations.

At the conclusion of the event, the attendees conducted short and long-term strategic planning ways-ahead in order to synchronize future, accident-prevention efforts across the ASC enterprise.

"Now our return on this investment must create visible effects to enhance readiness, support the vision of the command, lines of effort, and lines of communication to protect our people, equipment and infrastructure," Coffman said. "Command expectations of these safety professionals remain high, but I feel this new team is up to the challenge."
