FORT BENNING, Ga., (Oct. 12, 2016) -- The Fort Benning Doughboys will face off against the Columbus State University Cougars Oct. 20 in the fifth annual Doughboy Bowl at Doughboy Stadium.
There's a lot of anticipation going into this, said Sgt. 1st Class Thomas Threatt, the assistant coach.
Threatt said that he believes the Doughboys are capable of pulling off a repeat win.
"Two years ago we lost the bowl game to Columbus State and they had the trophy for the year," said Threatt. "Last year, we brought it back. It was a really good game."
"I feel confident in the way that we've been playing," he added.
Despite not having much time to put in for practice, Threatt said that the team remains passionate about the game of football.
"For a lot of guys it's their last chance to play this sport," he added. "I played for three years and it was like my last opportunity to play and show that I can still do it. Now, I'm coaching."
Threatt revealed that coaching the Doughboys has brought him a lot of joy.
"This is something I really enjoy doing," he said. "I want to coach when I get out of the military. Being able to help other grown men get better out on the ball field has definitely made me feel good. Seeing that they've learned from practice to practice or game to game. Every game we've gotten better. We haven't won yet this season, but every game we're better than we were before."
According to Threatt, a lot of the guys come out there hard, ready to give it their all while some are in it just for the fun.
"I try to keep reminding them that this is a chance of a lifetime," he said. "That's how I felt. Each snap is one more snap than they had in high school or college. It's just one more chance they have to do something that others can't do."
Threatt hopes that the Fort Benning community will come out in droves to support the Doughboys in the bowl game.
"This game is a chance to cheer on your community. We're a team that was made here at Fort Benning," said Threatt.
Tailgating for the Doughboy Bowl will begin at 3 p.m. and opening ceremonies will start at 5:30 p.m. with kickoff at 6 p.m.
