FORT BELVOIR, Va. (Army News Service, March 2, 2009) -- Army Knowledge Online/Defense Knowledge Online has reached a major milestone, recording more than one million logins during a single day last week.
AKO Operations logged 394,120 users of AKO/DKO accessing the enterprise Web portal 1,003,320 times on Feb. 23.
Army Knowledge Online is the enterprise Web portal for the United States Army, offering secure e-mail, file storage and management, instant messaging and other collaboration tools to Soldiers, family members, retirees, and other members of the Army community. DKO extends the reach of these tools to users throughout the Department of Defense, including Sailors, Marines, Airmen and Defense personnel.
"Having over a million logins in a single day demonstrates AKO's wide usage and continued growth," said Lt. Col. Ken Fritzsche, chief of Operations for AKO/DKO.
"More and more people are coming to AKO everyday to share information and gain access to things they need to do their job," Fritzsche said. "Using AKO as a virtual thumb drive and looking up contacts on the social networking feature 'myProfile', are certainly gaining in popularity. Nowadays, AKO is being used for more than just reading e-mail and instant messaging friends and family."
The AKO/DKO portals currently serve about 2.2 million users, many of whom access enterprise features like e-mail, personnel records and forums on a daily basis.
In another sign of steadily increasing usage, AKO recorded its billionth login when Chief Warrant Officer Jon Cahill of the 116th Brigade Combat Team, Idaho Army National Guard, signed onto the portal in September.
Both achievements are markers of how far Army Knowledge Online platform has come since the portal was launched in 1999, officials say. They point out that AKO has grown from a small collaboration site to a fully-developed enterprise Web portal offering services to Soldiers and other users 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all around the globe.
"AKO continues to be a valuable asset to the entire Army and grows even more as it expands to DKO and serves the entire DOD community" Fritzsche said.
