Autumn brings the end of Daylight Saving Time and the beginning of Fire Prevention Month. The change in season also ushers in the celebration of Columbus Day. On Monday, 10 October, our Nation will commemorate Columbus Day.

The Columbus Day holiday weekend grants many of our Soldiers, Civilians and Families the opportunity to enjoy time spent with family and friends and the new season. Whether enjoying outdoor activities with your family or traveling out of town during this holiday, be aware of the weather forecast and always keep safety in the forefront of your plans. Avoid driving under the influence as it impairs your driving skills, reaction time, and judgment.

Remember, when traveling out of town to always keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, to get plenty of rest before departing, ensure your vehicle is in good working condition, and ensure everyone wears their seat belt at all times.

As the days get shorter and the temperature changes, it is vital to recognize the unique hazards associated with the change in season. As we make the transition from Daylight Saving Time back to Standard Time on Sunday, 6 November 2016, please keep in mind these important safety tips:

*Road and Pedestrian Safety. Drivers should be aware of children walking to and from school, runners, cyclists, and people walking with their pets in the neighborhood. Light colored clothing including reflective material will increase visibility.

* Distracted Driving. The National Road Safety Foundation has completed studies providing evidence that commuting when darker outside can cause drivers to become lethargic. Don't drive if you are feeling drowsy. Pay attention on the road as other drivers may be driving drowsy. Phone calls and texting during driving is dangerous, for you and others.

* Daylight Saving Time. Studies suggest that it takes people who work traditional hours several days to fully readjust their sleep schedule after the time change. While it may seem a welcome gift to get an extra hour of sleep, there is a physiological consequence to changing our clocks.

October is also National Fire Prevention Month. Please be mindful and review your home fire escape plan, and also be sure to practice it. Likewise, it is a great time to have your heating system serviced or inspected for safety, longevity, and performance. Remember to test and replace batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. In addition, this is also a great time to clean and change your furnace filter. These helpful tips will help you in preparing for Fire Prevention Month.

Thank you for all your hard work, dedication, and professionalism in support of the AMC Mission! Let's have a SAFE and restful Columbus Day weekend.

AMC SAFE IS ARMY STRONG!
