The Department of the Army confirmed today the Department of Defense's announcement of the deployment of the 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team (Dragoon Raiders), 2nd Infantry Division, based at Fort Lewis, Washington as part of the next rotation of forces in Iraq. This announcement involves approximately 4,000 service members. Their deployment is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2009.
The Dragoon Raiders will replace a formation currently on the ground. The unit's deployment was moved forward several months to replace another Stryker brigade that is being re-missioned for Afghanistan.
The Army will provide only the best led, best trained, and best equipped forces possible to the combatant commander for operations in Iraq.
The 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division was activated at Fort Lewis, Washington on June 1, 2006, after forming as the Army's fourth Stryker Brigade in February 2005.
The brigade deployed to Iraq in April 2007 and was the first Stryker Brigade to deploy with all ten variants of the Stryker combat vehicle. During more than thirteen months of continuous, full-spectrum operations, the Raider Brigade successfully conducted nine brigade-level operations and more than 550 battalion- and company-sized operations throughout the Baghdad Northern Belt and in Diyala Province.
The brigade completed its mission in Iraq in June 2008, and returned to Ft. Lewis.
