REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. -- Army Materiel Command recently welcomed two general officers and three senior executive service members to its headquarters team at Redstone Arsenal.

Maj. Gen. Steven Shapiro assumed duties as AMC Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Logistics, G-3/4, in June. The G-3/4 oversees every AMC operation and mission -- developing, integrating and prioritizing acquisition, logistics and technology concepts, process improvements and strategies to plan, source, make, deliver and return materiel to support the warfighters.

"To be effective, the AMC G-3/4 must remain relevant, constantly adapting to operate in an ever-changing environment," Shapiro said.

Maj. Gen. Allan W. Elliott took over as AMC's Deputy Chief of Staff in August. In that role, he is responsible for synchronizing plans, policies, operations and procedures across the staff and AMC's 10 major subordinate commands.

"My number one goal is to ensure this incredibly talented AMC staff remains focused on what's really important -- the priorities of our leadership and support of our global workforce -- while servicing the readiness of the current force and developing the technologies and materiel for the future force," Elliott said.

Max Wyche is AMC's Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, G-1. He assumed responsibility in August to help sustain, train and renew AMC's 60,000-plus civilian workforce.

"AMC is one of the world's greatest organizations. One of my goals as G-1 is to let our employees know the importance of the mission, while making sure they know we care about them," Wyche said.

Nathan A. Godwin became the Director of the Current Operations Directorate, G-3/4, in June. His section is responsible for planning, synchronization and integration of all activities involved in the command and control for AMC's worldwide mission.

"I believe success is a better teacher than failure," Godwin said. "As you move through your career, you can get a sense of self-worth from what you accomplish well, and it provides the motivation and lessons needed to excel during the times you didn't get it right. In the end, success breeds success."

Laura Avery was selected this summer to serve as an acting senior executive service member, as the AMC Acting Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff, G-8, for one year. The program is part of the Army's Senior Executive Talent Management, Executive Placement Program.

"The program is designed to give GS-14s and 15s an opportunity to work in positions at the SES level, which gives them a broad experience base and the opportunity to make them competitive for future SES vacancies," said Sue Goodyear, AMC's Deputy Chief of Staff for Resource Management, G-8.

Shapiro, Elliott, Wyche, Godwin and Avery join an established group of general officers and senior executive service professionals who comprise AMC's leadership across the staff.
