COLONEL SHAWN REED

Col. Shawn Reed is the Deputy Commander of Sustainment for U.S. Army Alaska.

Col. Shawn E Reed hails from Bass Harbor, Maine. He received his commission in 1989 from the University of Southern Maine ROTC program. He is married to Dr. Mary Lim Reed, LTC, USA, of NYC, NY.

After commissioning, COL Reed was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry, 2ID, Korea where he served as a Rifle Platoon Leader and HHC Executive Officer. Subsequently, he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell Kentucky, where he served as a Delta Company Platoon Leader, Rifle Company Executive Officer, Battalion S3 Air, and Battalion S4.

Following graduation from the Infantry Officer Advanced Course, COL Reed was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry, 6th ID (Separate), Fort Wainwright, Alaska, where he served as the BN assistant S3 and commanded a Rifle Company. After company command COL Reed served at Fort Bragg, NC with the 18th Airborne Corps as a Team Chief, Emergency Deployment Readiness Exercise division of G3, and as the 18th Airborne Corps Deputy G3. Following completion of the Command and General Staff College, COL Reed was assigned to 1st BDE, 25th Infantry Division (Stryker) at Fort Lewis, Washington, where he served as the BN S3 for 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry and the BDE S3 for the Lancer Stryker Brigade.

In 2004 COL Reed was reassigned to US Army Alaska where he served as the Deputy G7 and the Deputy G3 Forward, Fort Wainwright, Alaska for 12 months prior to becoming the 172d Stryker Brigade Combat Team Executive Officer. During his 30 months as 172d SBCT XO he deployed to Mosul and Baghdad, Iraq for their 16 month extended tour. COL Reed took command of the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1/25th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Fort Wainwright, Alaska in December of 2006. He commanded this battalion through deployments to Australia as part of Operation Talisman Sabre and to the Philippines as part of Operation Balikatan. From September 2008 to September 2009 COL Reed commanded the Battalion through a combat deployment to Baqubah, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Following Battalion Command Col Reed attended the United States Army War College in Carlisle, PA., and subsequently commanded the 191st Infantry Brigade (TS) at Joint Base Lewis McChord, WA. Col Reed deployed with elements 191st IN BDE as part of the International Security Assistance Force -- Afghanistan from September 2012 through May 2013. From June of 2013 to June of 2014 COL Reed was assigned as the Operations Officer (G3) for First U.S. Corps (I Corps), Joint Base Lewis McCord.

COL Reed holds an undergraduate degree in political science from the University of Southern Maine and a Masters in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. His military education includes the Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced courses, the United States Army Command and General Staff College and the United States Army War College.

COL Reed's awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit with 1 OLC, the Bronze Star Medal with 2 OLC, the Meritorious Service Medal with 3 OLC's, the Army Commendation Medal with 2 OLC's and the Army Achievement Medal with 1 OLC. He has also earned the Expert Infantryman's Badge, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and the Combat Infantryman's Badge.
