PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. -- On June 22, the ARDEC/PEO AMMO Lean Six Sigma Competency Office (LSSCO) held its third Black Belt networking event and certification ceremony at the Cannon Gate Catering & Conference Center at Picatinny Arsenal.
One Executive Black Belt and 18 Green Belts were certified from October 2015 to March 2016. Their corresponding LSS projects resulted in a cost avoidance/savings of over $53 million.
LSS projects are intended to develop potential cost avoidance and savings, improved quality and customer satisfaction and reduced risk to the warfighter. The recipients worked in project teams on a wide range of technical and transactional projects that included developing new products and processes as well as improving or "leaning" existing products and processes.
The event featured guest speaker Alison Fisher, the Program Director of Lean for the State of Connecticut, who shared her lessons learned.
In addition, the networking consisted of a "Lean Escape Game" which is based on lean concepts and included a lean crossword puzzle, a Dewey decimal system challenge, a 6S exercise, and a coded puzzle from the "Everything I Need To Know About Lean I Learned From 1st Grade" book.
This activity allowed the black belt community to network and collaborate in an effort to identify the four lean terms that identified coordinates on the Picatinny map that revealed the final four-digit code that ended the game.
The ceremony was hosted by Nghi Vo, Acting Chief of LSSCO. "Remember, learning is a continuous process--it's a journey," said Vo. "Learning needs practice and discipline to become skilled. So, don't stop after today. But continue to practice using the tools and methods."
The keynote speaker was John F. Hedderich, Director of the Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center.
The ARDEC/PEO AMMO LSS program fosters Continuous Process Improvement by providing vital LSS training and project support in order to meet customer needs.
John Finno, director of the Quality Engineering and System Assurance Directorate, said, "I challenge all of you to stay on this never ending journey of continuous improvement and become leaders for your organizations and competency areas."
The next LSS networking event and certification ceremony is scheduled for the December 2016 time frame.
