On July 29, 33 resiliency trainers and assistants received certificates during a graduation ceremony in the Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall library for their completion of the joint base's first-ever, four-day resilience training workshop.
According to Carla Moss, information referral program manager and JBM-HH's master resiliency trainer, the U.S. Army began a Readiness and Resiliency campaign to encourage trust, unity and other positive characteristics in relationships and command climates between leaders and Soldiers.
The thought is that Soldiers' preparedness to serve is directly tied to their physical, mental and emotional health, according to Moss.
"To lead that effort, leaders (designated Master Resiliency Trainers and other designees) are provided training to help their unit leaders facilitate resiliency-related events, discussions and team-building," she said.
The trainers conducted a four-day workshop lasting for six hours each day. Throughout the workshop, service members learned how to identify character strengths and to develop leadership skills and set goals.
"The things that you have done over the course of these last few days are preparing you to identify where the problems are before they began to be big problems," said Col. Jason T. Garkey, commander, 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) to graduates. "That is an art. It is not a science. Most importantly, it is so that we can develop an attitude within people, so that they understand how to cope with problems."
Pfc. Ashley Smith called the series of classes "enlightening" and said it taught her to be a better communicator.
"I don't like talking, but it actually taught me that talking helps a lot," she said. "If I needed to figure out how to communicate with someone who didn't want to communicate, then it gives me actual skills to communicate with someone without making them feel uncomfortable.
In addition to the training, the workshop is also structured for current MRT leaders/trainers to mentor RTAs so that they will one day become trainers, said Moss in an email.
