FORT BENNING, Ga., (Aug. 3, 2016) -- Fort Benning's Directorate of Emergency Services will begin the Trusted Traveler Program Aug. 7, said James Webster, the Physical Security Division chief at DES.
The Trusted Traveler Program will be active from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. at access control points postwide. It will allow Department of Defense identification cardholders to vouch for the occupants in their vehicle, Webster explained.
"If you are a Soldier, a Soldier's spouse, a retiree, a retiree's spouse or a Department of Defense employee then the guard will only have to check that one ID card in the vehicle. The program was designed to help speed up some of the traffic in the morning," he added.
Additionally, DES hopes to begin implementing an automated installation entry system Aug. 14 at access point three on I-185, Webster said.
One or two lanes will be set up with that. When that happens, it will be important for everyone to be looking at the overhead marquees on the access control points so they know what lanes to go into, he continued.
According to Webster, the visitor's center at the main gate will also begin undergoing renovation as part of the new changes in mid-August.
DES is also working on opening another visitors center for contractors at Harmony Church, though a definite date has not been set, Webster said.
