GARMISCH, Germany - Military leaders from the U.S. Army NATO Brigade, U.S. Army Europe and various NATO commands throughout Europe gathered for the 15th annual Senior Army Leaders Meeting July 25-28 in Garmisch, Germany.

"The intent is to achieve an understanding of the operating environment, receive some strategic leader guidance, and talk about lessons learned from the past year," said. Col. Jason Riley Commander of the U.S. Army NATO Brigade, who recently took command in July and said the conference was also a great opportunity for him to gain a better understanding of his command.

The forum gave the 75 representatives in attendance a chance come together in one room to discuss current and future issues, and receive strategic guidance for service members working in NATO assignments. The forum focused on issue that members of the United States Army NATO Brigade, which is located in Sembach, Germany, but has members stationed throughout Europe.

The NATO brigade consists of 3,000 military members and their families spread over 21 countries.

In addition to discussing issues specific to the NATO brigade among themselves, they also received the strategic guidance Riley mentioned from the U.S. Army Europe Deputy Commander Maj. Gen. Timothy McGuire. However, he did not just come to brief the group, but also to learn about their experiences.

"What was great about this is these are the men and women who are spread out throughout Europe right now working day in and day out with our NATO allies as part of NATO organizations, so for me it's been great to hear from them," said McGuire. "The United State Army Europe is very proud to be part of NATO, and as General Hodges (Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges the USAREUR Commander) says, 'we are in the very fabric of NATO.'"
