Medical Department Activity - Alaska welcomed a new commander July 22 at Fort Wainwright, Alaska's Physical Fitness Center. Col. Christopher Jarvis took command in front of a crowd of MEDDAC-AK staff, family, friends and distinguished guests during the ceremony hosted by Brig. Gen. Bertram Providence, Regional Health Command-Pacific (RHC-P) commanding general.
During remarks following the ceremonial passing of the colors, Providence commended MEDDAC-AK staff members for their daily efforts in successfully serving 30,000 beneficiaries throughout the state of Alaska, citing recent awards and accreditations.
"This team has consistently proven your commitment to improving access, quality and patient satisfaction in your quest to become a highly reliable healthcare organization," said Providence. "These efforts were recently recognized by receiving accolades from the Joint Commission and obtaining National Committee for Quality Assurance recognition for their patient-centered medical home."
The team has a lot to be proud of and he has no doubt MEDDAC-AK will continue to assist in maintaining a ready and resilient force under Jarvis, said Providence.
"It is our good fortune to have another proven leader and warrior ready to lead this vital organization," said Providence. "The background and experiences of Col. Jarvis are not only impressive, they display exactly the career path we are looking for in our officers to lead healthcare organizations and ensure mission success.
At the conclusion of the ceremony Jarvis thanked Providence for the opportunity to lead the staff at MEDDAC-AK.
"Thank you for your kind words and the opportunity to be here today. I am absolutely humbled; there is no place I would rather serve than here at Fort Wainwright, Regional Health Command-Pacific and Bassett Army Community Hospital."
COL Jarvis is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine in Family and Sports Medicine, a Fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians, and is a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit.
As commander of MEDDAC-AK, Jarvis will lead more than 600 Soldiers and civilians who provide care to active duty military, their family members, retirees and veterans in Alaska at Fort Wainwright, Joint-Base Elmendorf-Richardson and Fort Greely.
