ILLESHEIM, Germany -- Soldiers from the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, transferred authority to their replacements from 1st Armored Division, Combat Aviation Brigade, here, July 19, at Illesheim Army Airfield.
The 3rd Battalion, 501st Aviation Regiment, 1st Armored Division, Combat Aviation Brigade, replaced the 3rd Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, as the Regionally Allocated Aviation force deployed to Europe in support of the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade.
The nine month rotation for 3rd Bn., 227th Avn. Regt., began in November of 2015. They flew over 3,800 hours in 13 NATO allied and partner nations, conducted more than 1,000 paradrops and supported two JMRC rotations.
Task Force Apocalypse, 1AD CAB, is the third heel-to-toe rotational aviation task force assigned to Europe.
The culminating event for 3rd Bn., 227th Avn. Regt., was the multi-national battalion size air assault of over 400 Sky Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade, during exercise Anakonda 16. The air assault involved over 35 aircraft, which included two Polish Mi-17s and two Mi-24s.
The rotation is part of the U.S. Army's commitment to the European theater to ensure Army Europe has the right capability to meet training and operational requirements.
The incoming force from 3rd Bn., 501st Avn. Regt., 1AD CAB, "Task Force Apocalypse," arrived earlier this summer and begin training immediately.
Ten UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters from Charlie Company, 3rd Bn., 501st Avn. Regt., deployed early to Germany in order to further enable the 12th CAB during Anakonda 16.
