RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany -- Politicians aren't the only ones engaging in "mudslinging" as the election season heats up. Soldiers from the 16th Sustainment Brigade's 39th Transportation Battalion "muddied the waters" during an esprit and resiliency event held July 8 at Donnelly Park here.

The transportation troops joined military and civilian personnel for the third annual "Ramstein Mudless Mudder," designed to promote resiliency across the Air Force.

Participants competed in a 2.5-mile obstacle course consisting of challenges ranging from assisted and unassisted wall climbs, low crawls and a ropewalk to tire mounds, a "hay bale climb," monkey bars and much more.

"The course was more fun than I expected," said Sgt. Davonte Colflesh, an operations sergeant assigned to the 39th Trans. "It promoted teamwork, bringing us closer as a section."

"I would have loved to see more people from the unit participate," he added. "I believe it would have established stronger bonds and cohesion within the organization."

The battalion signed up two teams, dubbed the "Got Mudd" and "Fab 5" squads. The "Fabs" trudged through the mud a little quicker, completing the course in 37 minutes, 52 seconds. The "Mudders" finished in 39 minutes, 32 seconds. Most importantly, "It was a great team building experience and morale booster for our team members and myself," said Capt. Steven Waugh, one of the "Fab 5."

The event, participants seemed to agree, is great for several reasons, and participation, organizers said, is imperative because of its manifold benefits. It brings different military branches of service together and the unity fosters morale, teamwork, camaraderie, Soldier fitness and resiliency.

"It fosters cohesion and synergy," Waugh said. "Events like this reminds us all branches are fighting the same fight, stand united, and can come together for a greater cause."
