REDSTONE ARSENAL, Alabama -- After taking off the uniform, a Team Redstone member still accepts the role of mentoring Soldiers.

Retired Chief Warrant Officer 5 Harold L. DeBerry was named as the third Honorary Warrant Officer of the Regiment, or HWOOR, by the Ordnance Corps in a ceremony at Fort Lee, Virginia, May 11. DeBerry replaces retired Chief Warrant Officer 5 Joe Wurm.

"I have always aspired to contribute more than I consume," DeBerry said. "So any opportunity to contribute to the success of those who have empowered and enabled me to be successful has always been something within my focus."

DeBerry, a veteran who served more than 40 years, is a senior management analyst with the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command with the Civilian Workforce Development Integrated Product Team and is currently assigned to the Army Materiel Command's G-1 Strategic Analysis and Integration Cell until November.

As the Ordnance Corps HWOOR, DeBerry will serve to promote the traditions of the Ordnance Corps through the professional development of Ordnance warrant officers and serve as a worldwide mentor for Ordnance officers, warrant officers and noncommissioned officers in their pursuit of further development for service as Ordnance professionals.

"It is an honor and a privilege to serve as the Honorary Warrant Officer of the Regiment, especially considering it enables me to continue to mentor and coach Ordnance officers, warrant officers and noncommissioned officers," DeBerry said.

DeBerry was inducted into the Ordnance Corps Hall of Fame in 2010 after serving more than 40 years of active federal service. Prior to his retirement from the Army, he was appointed to serve as the Ordnance Corps' fifth Regimental Chief Warrant Officer where he was responsible for the personnel life cycle management for more than 3,800 Ordnance Active and Reserve Component Warrant Officers. He also served as a member of the Senior Warrant Officer Advisory Council, which was chartered by the vice chief of staff of the Army.

"My first order of business is to solicit support for the Ordnance Corps Memorial Fund for the Ordnance Corps Memorial," DeBerry said. "The memorial will be dedicated to commemorating the Ordnance Corps and the 274 Ordnance Corps Soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice in their service to the US Army and the nation."

During his Army career, DeBerry served in Vietnam, Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Joint Guard, Joint Forge and others. He also served overseas in Korea and Germany.

"The Ordnance Corps was founded by Congress in 1812," DeBerry said. "The Ordnance Corps recently celebrated its 204th birthday. Along with the Quartermaster Corps and Transportation Corps, the Ordnance Corps is a critical component of the U.S. Army logistics system."

DeBerry will serve in his position for three years and may be granted a second three-year term by the Chief of Ordnance. The Ordnance HWOOR retains the title of "Emeritus" following their term.

"Throughout my tenure as Honorary Warrant Officer of the Regiment, I hope to motivate, mentor and coach past, present and aspiring Ordnance Corps Soldiers and civilians through targeted communication and significantly increasing officer, warrant officer, Soldier and civilian membership in the Ordnance Corps Association," DeBerry said.
