Fort Benning's Army Community Service offers a different training course each month for Family Readiness Group leaders, members and advisors.
For FRG members to become a certified key caller, treasurer, FRG leader or part of a care team they must complete four training courses, explained Nicole Heller, a specialist with ACS's mobilization and deployment program.
Heller led an FRG Power Course July 7 in the ACS Training Room in Building 7.
"We offer the Power Course so that individuals with time constraints will have the option to get all the training done in one day. It is held every other month," Heller said.
"I'm hoping that individuals who take this course will get some really good tools to make their FRGs more effective and increase their FRG's participation," she added.
Community members are also welcome to attend the training.
"We would like the opportunity to teach them about what an FRG can do for them and the ways FRGs assist the command," Heller said.
Family readiness groups are an organization comprised of Soldiers, civilians, employees, family members and volunteers who belong to a unit that is sponsored by the command, Heller explained at the beginning of the Power Course.
"As an FRG, it's important to make contact with your new arrivals. There's a very short window of time for you to reach out to them before they potentially write you off," Heller said.
During the Power Course, Heller also highlighted the FRG infrastructure, explained how to compose official and unofficial newsletters, provided tips for distributing information via social networking and offered ideas for training volunteers.
"This class has been very helpful. The instructor made the information very easy to understand," said Elena Meholick, an FRG Leader.
The information provided in this course is very important because it will help individuals run their FRG properly, added 1st Sgt. Ernesto Lopez, with the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation.
