Hawthorne Army Depot, Nevada -- The Mineral County Economic Development Authority, in partnership with the Hawthorne Army Depot, established property as a certified site in the Diversify Nevada program, at a ribbon-cutting ceremony, here, June 28.
The partnership creates a Hawthorne Technology and Industry Park, where commercial companies can potentially establish businesses and create jobs for the local community. It becomes the largest site for business development in the State of Nevada.
"The Hawthorne Technology and Industrial Center is a great example of how federal, state, regional and local organizations are working together to create jobs and prosperity in this area surrounding the Hawthorne Army Depot," said Lt. Col. Gregory Gibbons, Hawthorne Army Depot commander. "Today we will cut a ribbon, signifying this site certification. You have laid the tracks for the success of future jobs for Mineral County."
The project's partners are the Governor's Office of Economic Development, Highway 95 Regional Development Authority, the Mineral County Economic Development Authority, SOC-USA, and the Armament Retooling and Manufacturing Support program.
The ARMS program is authorized by Congressional legislation, established in 1993, to encourage the commercial and government use of unused property at select Government-Owned, Contractor-Operated locations, in order to compensate for reduced production volumes and facility closures that would otherwise have an adverse impact on local communities. This program adds potential businesses to the depot, maintains critical skills, creates local employment, and retains the defense readiness of the facility's active mission.
The certified site at HWAD offers unique facilities for industries that require buffer zones from residential or commercial areas, security, storage, and/or large tracts of land for potential tenants. Site certification minimizes risk and acquisition time for tenants.
"This site certification is about enabling a regional vision for the economy," said Michael Skaggs, Deputy Director, Nevada's Office of Economic Development, and the event's keynote speaker. "It's a process of collaboration. You're defining the Hawthorne area's economic dream for the future. I'm excited and I hope you are!"
Hawthorne's location, within eight hours of west coast markets and with interstate highway and railroad access, enables HWAD to be suited for manufacturing and storage in Nevada, while serving possible customers in California.
