COL Scott Peterson graduated from the University of Miami (FL) in 1993 and was commissioned into the Engineer Branch. He served in a variety of command positions in Air Assault, Airborne, and Mechanized combat engineer units in the United States and the Republic of Korea, including the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), 82nd Airborne Division, and the 2nd Infantry Division. His operational and strategic staff experience includes positions at the group, division, and field army level, with deployments to Azerbaijan and Iraq.

COL Peterson attended the Civil Affairs Qualification Course and received Russian language training at the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Training Center, Fort Bragg, NC. COL Peterson served as a Civil Affairs Team Leader in the 96th Civil Affairs Battalion (Airborne), conducting multiple deployments, humanitarian support missions, and initial entry into Iraq in March 2003 with 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne).

Following two combat deployments to Iraq and assignment with 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, COL Peterson was assigned to 8th Army as the Assistant Chief of Staff G9. COL Peterson also served as the 8th Army Commanding General's Executive Officer from April 2011 to June 2012. In 2012, COL Peterson assumed command of the Los Angeles Recruiting Battalion, where he served as Battalion Commander through 2014.

Following command, COL Peterson attended the U.S. Army War College, earning a Master of Science

Degree in Strategic Studies. He also holds a MS Degree in Defense Analysis from the Naval Post-Graduate School, Monterey, California, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Architecture from the University of Miami (FL).

COL Peterson is a graduate of the U.S. Army Ranger School and Sapper Leader Course. His military schools include the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Mountain Warfare Course, Jumpmaster School, Civil Affairs Qualification Course, and Combined Arms and Services Staff School.

COL Peterson's awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal (with oak leaf cluster), the Meritorious Service Medal (with two oak leaf clusters), and the Joint Service Commendation Medal. He has earned the Senior Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Ranger and Sapper Tabs, and the German foreign parachutist wings.

COL Peterson assumed the duties as the Commander, US Army Garrison Yongsan on 24 June 2016. His responsibilities include providing installation command functions for 19 installations that support US Forces Korea service members, civilians, Families, Korean Augmentees to the US Army (KATUSA), and local nationals; and setting the conditions to allow US Forces Korea to transition elements of Yongsan to the government of Korea as part of the Yongsan Relocation Plan.
