Colonel Brandon D. Newton
Commander, U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area I
Col. Brandon D. Newton enlisted in the United States Army as an Infantryman in 1987. After completing Basic Training, Airborne School, and the Ranger Indoctrination Program, he was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, at Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia, where he served in a weapons squad. In January 1990 he was admitted to the U.S. Army's Green to Gold program at the University of South Carolina, and after graduation in 1992 was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Infantry. Following completion of the Infantry Officer Basic Course, 2nd Lt. Newton was assigned to the 6th Infantry Division (L), at Fort Richardson, Alaska, where he served his initial company grade assignments in the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, and the 1st Battalion, 501st Airborne Infantry Regiment, until 1996. After completing the Infantry Officer Advanced Course, Capt. Newton was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, where he commanded Company A, 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment.
In 2003 Col. Newton attended the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and the School of Advanced Military Studies. After graduation, Col. Newton deployed in December 2005 to Iraq with the 4th Infantry Division as a maneuver planner in the MND-B Headquarters. In the summer of 2006 he moved to 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, as the Operations Officer of 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, executing operations north of Baghdad. Following this deployment, Col. Newton was assigned as the Squadron Executive Officer and prepared the squadron for a second deployment to MND-B in the spring of 2008 for OIF 07-09. In August 2009 Col. Newton was assigned as the Deputy Brigade Commander, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, at Fort Carson, Colorado. Col. Newton deployed to Afghanistan in March 2010 and assumed duties as the Deputy Brigade Commander, 4th Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, conducting combat operations in western Afghanistan. He assumed command of the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, in August 2010. He deployed with the battalion to Afghanistan in March 2012 and conducted combat operations in Kunar Province. In March 2013 Col. Newton assumed duties as the G3 (Rear) of the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson prior to attending the U.S. Army War College from 2014-2015. Col. Newton then served as Chief of the C-WMD Fusion Cell, U.S. Forces Korea J3, in South Korea. In June 2016 he assumed command of the U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area I, headquartered at Camp Red Cloud in Uijeongbu, South Korea.
Col. Newton is a graduate of the Infantry Basic and Advanced Courses; Command and General Staff College; the School of Advanced Military Studies; and the U.S. Army War College. His awards and decorations include: the Bronze Star Medal with three oak leaf clusters; Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters; Purple Heart; Army Commendation Medal with V device; National Defense Service Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Good Conduct Medal; Iraq and Afghanistan Campaign Medals. Col. Newton is a Senior Parachutist, and has been awarded the Expert Infantryman Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Ranger Tab.
