Torun, Poland -- Soldiers from the 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery Regiment along with partners from the British 19th Tank Transporter Squadron and the Polish 3rd Surface to Air Missile Brigade celebrated the United States Army's 241st birth day together 14 June 2016.
After weeks of 24 hour operations in Poland, an unusual hush fell over the 174th Ohio National Guard Air Defense Artillery Brigade's combined tactical operations center. The Soldiers who are the life blood of this multinational exercise had taken a few hours out of their evening to go unwind and celebrate 241 years of selfless service. The evening consisted of card games, athletics, and a special steak dinner, all of which was shared amongst all three nations present.
As the evening wore on and thoughts began to drift back to resuming operations, one final event was held to commemorate the festivities, the ceremonial cutting of the United States Army Birth Day Cake. Keeping with tradition, both the oldest and the youngest Soldier cut the cake to symbolize the passing of knowledge from one generation to the next, but on this unique occasion they had help from the youngest and oldest Polish Soldier present as well. This was a clear symbol of the multinational collaboration that exercise Anakonda 16 represents and the future that the United States Army is striving to accomplish.
"A lot has changed in the past 241 years," said Lt. Col. Douglas Lynch, the 5-7 ADA Commander, as he addressed everyone at the ceremony, "and as I look out and see 3 different nations standing side by side in friendship, I know it has been for the best, and I can't wait to see what the future looks like."
