Torun, Poland -- Soldiers from the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command and the 174th Ohio National Guard Air Defense Artillery Brigade along with partners from the Polish 3rd Surface to Air Missile Brigade hosted Lt. Gen. Joseph Anderson, the United States Army Deputy Chief of Staff, G-3/5/7, to display the successes and challenges of multinational air defense interoperability 14 June 2016.
It was an overcast day as Lt. Gen. Anderson touched down at the landing zone near the 174th ADA Brigades Combined Tactical Operations Center. As he disembarked the helicopter and briskly walked across the field to meet Col. Janelle Eickhoff, the 10th AAMD Commander, he had one goal prominent in his mind, understanding the unique challenges that face air defenders in Europe as they modernize their force and strive for more multinational interoperability.
"We have done some truly incredible things since we came out here," state Maj. Perrin, the 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery Regiment's Lead Operations Officer, "but there is always room for improvement."
There are 2 major challenges that the air defense community in Europe seeks to overcome. The first is the need for increased release ability and foreign disclosure with partners to create a multinational air picture. The second is the challenges presented by the unique threat set that the European theater faces.
By the end of the site visit, the Soldiers of the 10th AAMDC and the 174th ADA Brigade had impressed upon Lt. Gen. Anderson just how prevalent these challenges were to current operations, but more importantly they also displayed their indomitable will as they faced these challenges head on and worked side by side with their Polish partners to create solutions. With these motivated and capable Soldiers leading the way, the future of air defense operations in Europe looks bright.
