FORT SILL, Okla., June 9, 2016 -- The Maj. Gen. Aubrey "Red" Newman Award was presented to Sgt. 1st Class Geoffery Landon, May 31.
According to the award's description, it is used to recognize outstanding junior officers and senior noncommissioned officers who "are the embodiment of a leader and demonstrated excellence in mentoring."
"It's truly an honor and very humbling to be recognized by my leadership up through the (Forces Command) level," said Landon, who was the former A Battery, 1st Battalion, 14th Field Artillery first sergeant. "I take great pride in mentoring Soldiers and noncommissioned officers to develop themselves professionally and personally. In my opinion it's the most important role as a leader."
While serving as battery first sergeant, Landon helped prepare and deploy the battery to Afghanistan in January 2015 with only two months notice.
Lt. Col. Peter Sittenauer, 1-14th FA battalion commander, said Landon's deployment experience and leadership ensured his battery was prepared and ready to execute.
"He inspired his NCOs and Soldiers to develop themselves professionally with military and civilian education and to strive for excellence in their Army careers," said Sittenauer. "His steadfast devotion and commitment to the betterment of the unit and its Soldiers has been a constant measure of his leadership."
Newman served the Army for 34 years where he commanded the 34th Infantry Regiment of the 24th Infantry Division during the Philippines Campaign in World War II.
He is known for his famous cry of "Follow Me!" on Leyte Beach as he rallied his troops and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions and leadership during the battle.
