FORT BENNING, Ga., (May 25, 2016) -- Each Memorial Day our nation pauses to reflect upon those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. The history of the United States is full of servicemen and -women who have selflessly laid down their lives in defense of our freedom. So, I ask you to join me in remembrance. Remember the sacrifices made by our fallen brothers and sisters over the centuries of service to our nation. Remember their Families and loved ones who supported their service and mourn their loss. Remember those who serve today, at home and abroad. They form the frontline of our nation's defense, ever ready to stand in the gap between the American people and those who wish to do us harm.

For nearly 100 years the Fort Benning community has been equipping young men and women with the skills they need to serve in whatever capacity America requires. They overcame tyranny in Europe, fought terror in the Middle East, delivered aid following enumerable disasters and much more. This proud legacy is one that we should not take for granted, nor rest upon, but one that should inspire us to continue building a force founded on the sacrifices made by those before us and prepared to face the challenges that lay ahead.

Finally, I urge all of Fort Benning's great Soldiers, Civilians and Families to bear safety in mind as you enjoy your long weekend. While we spend time with loved ones this holiday weekend, it is important we do so in a safe manner.

One Force, One Fight!
