FORT BENNING, Ga., (May 25, 2016) -- Fort Benning will observe Memorial Day at 9 a.m. May 30 at the Main Post Cemetery.
To honor fallen warriors, the ceremony will include the Maneuver Center of Excellence Band playing the national anthem, the 194th Armored Brigade providing the Honor Guard firing team, two Soldiers with the 198th Infantry Brigade placing the wreath and the Airborne and Ranger Training Brigade providing the Color Guard.
Brig. Gen. Eric Wesley, commanding general of the Maneuver Center of Excellence and Fort Benning, will be the guest speaker.
Originally known as Decoration Day, in 1971 Congress established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May and made it a federal holiday.
More than 5,300 service members have been killed in action since the start of Operation Enduring Freedom Oct. 7, 2001.
