USAG YONGSAN - U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan community members and their families enjoyed their day, May 21, with two major events at the Collier Community Fitness Center. Each participant pushed themselves to the limit through "The Murph Challenge 2016", and some promoted friendship between Republic of Korea Army and U.S. Army performing at the "Combat Taekwondo exhibition."
The Murph Challenge is the official annual fundraiser of the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation. This annual event is to remember Lt. Murphy, United States Navy Seal officer who was awarded the U.S. military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions during the War in Afghanistan.
The race starts with a one mile run, one hundred pull ups, two hundred push ups, three hundred squats and finishes with another one mile run with body armor that weighs 20 pounds.
According to the official home page the 'MURPH' is more than just a workout. It is a tradition that helps push us, humble us, and dedicate a bit of pain and sweat to honor a man who gave everything he had.
"The Murph Challenge is probably the only competition I've been a part of where people sign up for the sake of participating, not winning," said John Sim, Health & Fitness Program Manager who hosted the event. "The final finisher receives just as much support and applause as the first finisher and all effort is genuine. I welcome any and all members of the Yongsan community to participate next year."
At the same time, hundreds of people from each areas across peninsula gathered up to watch fascinating performances of Taekwondo also hosted at the CCFC. Experts from both ROKA and U.S. Army boasted their skills through sparring competition, breaking contest and team demonstrations.
The sparring competition was divided players into 6 groups under the weight standards (Fly-132lbs or under, Feather 132-149lbs, Light and Welter 149-167lbs, Middle 167-187lbs, Heavy 187-209lbs, and Super Heavy 209lbs and up).
Numerous units, including members of the ROKA and Republic of Korea police, from across the peninsula were invited to participate in the Taekwondo demonstration.
The 2016 Seoul Breaker Challenge Series is scheduled for June 4, at CCFC. For more information, contact DSN 736-4588.
