On Monday, 30 May 2016, we will pause and remember the words of President John F. Kennedy, "A Nation reveals itself not only by the men it produces, but also by the men it remembers, the men it honors." As Americans, may we come together to remember both the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives on behalf of our country in the name of freedom and democracy.

The Memorial Day National Moment of Remembrance, originally known as Decoration Day, is one of our Nation's oldest and significant holidays. Together, we recall the sacrifice of all who have set their personal aspirations aside for the preservation of our Nation. Their sacrifices, and those of their military families, are our freedom's foundation and guardians. The debt is immeasurable and I encourage all of you to observe this National Moment of Remembrance.

This day also marks the "unofficial" start of summer and past experience warns us that summer is marked by increased activities on the roadways, waterways, and recreational facilities which significantly heighten the potential for accidents, injuries, and deaths. With increased activities, we must be aware of the associated risks and the importance of making informed decisions. Always ensure you have the required safety equipment for your summer activity. Whether it is fire extinguishers when grilling, or life vests when boating, make sure it becomes part of your recreational risk mitigation strategy.

We must also stay vigilant of distracted driving and other distracted drivers. Distracted driving is any activity that diverts a person's attention away from the primary task of maintaining control of their vehicle at all times. Data shows that nearly half a million drivers are injured and over 3,000 killed every year from distracted driving. Please do your part to stay focused; set the example for your Family members when you are behind the wheel.

I ask Commanders, Directors, and Supervisors to discuss safety at staff meetings prior to the Memorial Day weekend. Special emphasis should be placed on using safety equipment properly (seat belts, personal flotation devices, watercraft, motorcycle safety gear, etc.) and utilizing the Travel Risk Planning System (TRiPS). TRiPS is an excellent vehicle accident prevention tool for assessing an individual's risk. While not mandatory for DA Civilians (unless in a TDY or PCS status), it is for all Soldiers.

You and your extended family members are AMC's most precious resource. Thank you for your hard work and dedication. My family joins me in extending to all of you and your families, our very best wishes for a SAFE and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend.

AMC SAFE is ARMY STRONG!
