SIBIU, ROMANIA---The tenth annual Conference of European Armies for Noncommissioned Officers wrapped up in Sibiu, Romania, May 18. The three-day event, co-hosted by U.S. Army Europe and the Romanian Land Forces, brought together senior NCOs from 26 European nations and the U.S. to share tactics and techniques and to build relationships among European, U.S. and other allied and partner forces.

The CEANCO was established in 2006 and provides a venue for creating shared-training opportunities and establishing relationships between European ground forces and contributing to regional and global understanding, peace and stability.

"This is a valuable asset for us to be able to share ideas, knowledge and experiences," said USAREUR Command Sgt. Maj. Sheryl Lyon. Sharing ideas was the goal of every conversation, she said. Many of the senior leaders who attended the conference said they looked forward to engaging in discussions and re-establishing networks with their peers.

"Participants gain vital information, but more than (that), they gain fellowship," said Lyon. "Having a fellowship makes us all better in the end."

Lyons said one of the greatest opportunities that we have here in USAREUR and our allied partners it empowers us to be able to work together.

Sergeant Major of the Army Daniel Dailey was in attendance for this year's CEANCO. Dailey gave a briefing on the future of U.S. Army leader development and talked about the importance of continually enhancing leader development plans and opportunities for NCOs of all participating armies.

"(This) strengthens the NCO Corps in Europe and across all nations," said Dailey. "It is critical as we work together in the future that we assure, deter, and defeat any potential adversaries that we may have."

Many of the discussions during the conference focused on the improvement and the growth of non-commissioned officers throughout the scope of USAREUR operations.

"We're talking about NCO education and development to sharing the experiences and lessons learned," said Dailey. "As well as the knowledge skills and abilities that we can share with each other in order to make our NCO Corps' better."

Dailey acknowledged there are inherent challenges working alongside allied partners, but said consistently training together can strengthen partnerships despite those challenges.
