The 187th MED BN Commander Lt. Col. Jody Dugai, along with Command Sgt. Maj. Rakimm Broadnax-Rogers, signed a charter with Briscoe Elementary School Principal Michelle Hickman part of the Fort Sam Houston Adopt-A-School Program (FSHAAS). Under this charter, the 187th MED BN will conduct monthly visits with the school principal, coordinate volunteer events, assist with career days, sponsor field trips, and many other activities.

The signing ceremony was held in front of the Briscoe Elementary School second grade class, Mr. Pedro Martinez, Superintendent of the San Antonio Independent School District, and leadership from the U.S Army Medical Department School and Center Academy Brigade (Provisional).

"We welcome the Soldiers of the 187th Medical Battalion to our school, and are looking forward to great year. Your experience, particularly in health and science, will be wonderful for our school." said Principal Hickman.

While thanking Lt. Col. Dugai for her efforts in establishing the charter, Superintendent Martinez highlighted his personal connection with the nation's military. "My brother served three tours in Iraq as a Marine. I want to thank each one of you and all the Soldiers at Fort Sam Houston for volunteering at our San Antonio schools. This fantastic program is making a difference."

After the charting signing, Lt. Col. Dugai and Command Sgt. Maj. Broadnax-Rogers surprised the students with the gift of a five-foot wooden statute of a bear, the mascot of Briscoe Elementary School. Addressing audience Lt. Col. Dugai said, "This bear represents the partnership between the 187th Medical Battalion and the students, teachers, and parents of Briscoe Elementary School. Every morning as you come to school it will remind you of our commitment to Briscoe Elementary and the community."
