OFFICE OF THE U.S. ARMY SURGEON GENERAL, Falls Church, Va. (May 13, 2016) -- Army Medicine stood out among the military organizations participating in the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) 2016 convocation ceremony held March 13 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago.

Of the servicemembers recognized during this annual awards event held March 13 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago, the Army celebrated having 12 of its finest medical professionals advance to Fellow status.

For meeting all ACHE requirements and earning this distinction, a hearty congratulations has been extended to the Army's newest Fellows: Lt. Cols. Casey Carver, Jennifer Staples, Ian Lee, Michelle Gradnigo; Majs. John Lavoie, Kenneth Sturtz, Nolan Brandt, Alex Montgomery, Serena Mukai, Maria Shelton; and Capts. LaCharles Brown and Brandon Koser.

Each year, more than 4,000 healthcare executives gather for the American College of Healthcare Executives Congress on Healthcare Leadership. This includes multiple continuing education events and a great deal of networking and collaboration by healthcare executives from all over the country and many foreign countries.

The ACHE Recognition Program celebrates affiliates' commitment to the healthcare management profession. Recognition is bestowed at three levels based on a range of specific volunteer activities that demonstrate leadership and contributions to furthering professional excellence.

The Fellow credential is awarded to members of the college who meet several criteria, including at least 5 years of healthcare management experience, obtaining a masters degree from an accredited program, passing the ACHE Board of Governor's exam, and obtaining references from other Fellows (one of which must be a structured interview). A copy of their current job description, organizational chart, and resume demonstrating performance as a healthcare executive is also required.

Additional steps necessary to complete the Fellow Requirements include possessing 36 hours of Healthcare Management Continuing Education credit earned during the three years preceding becoming a Fellow; 12 hours of ACHE Face-to-Face Education, and participation in two healthcare related and two community/civic activities within the past three years, and having three years of ACHE membership tenure.

According to Army ACHE Regent Col. Mark D. Swofford, ACHE is the premier professional organization for healthcare executives, and the Fellow credential is a recognized symbol of excellence in both Federal and Civilian healthcare. Anyone who is a healthcare executive can join the organization, and if they meet the criteria for advancement, they can earn the Fellow credential.

"Our military medical professionals who earn the ACHE Fellow credential have invested their personal time and resources to pass the Board of Governors examination and achieve board certification in healthcare administration," said Swofford. "Attaining Fellow status is a testament to their commitment to excellence in healthcare, and the skills and abilities developed in that pursuit enable them to advance our entire military health system as they move into leadership positions."

ACHE has dedicated its efforts on advancing healthcare management excellence since it was established in 1933. It reportedly has more than 48,000 members representing all professional disciplines within the field of healthcare and also associated professions. Of this number, about 9,200 of them are Fellows.
