FORT BENNING, Ga., (May 11, 2016) -- More than 7,500 Soldiers and civilians from Fort Benning and the surrounding communities gathered at Wetherby Field to attend a free concert hosted by the Fort Benning Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation.
The concert featured country artist Brooke Eden, Christian hip hop artist Lecrae and rock band Daughtry.
Bridgett Siter, Marketing and Social Media specialist for the DFMWR, explained that the concert took more than six months to plan.
"We work with Army Entertainment for most of our concerts. They collaborate with the artists and typically let us know who is available for a concert," she said.
"I think this concert appealed to a broad audience, because it included country, hip-hop and rock artists. It was also Family friendly," Siter added.
Traci Robinson came out to the concert to support her husband who plays drums for Lecrae.
"It's a pleasure to be here. It feels great to be able to participate in an event close to home," Robinson said.
Colton Evans decided to attend the concert because of his love for Lecrae and what he stands for.
"I came to this concert to see Lecrae. He's a man of God and he just inspires me everyday. I wouldn't be the man I am today without him and his music," said Evans, who rapped along with Lecrae during his entire set.
Jessica Ortiz-Colon chose to attend the concert because her son is a big fan of Lecrae.
"It's great to see a Christian rapper come out and move the crowd the way he did. Instead of rapping about something like girls or money, he's presenting a message that's worthwhile," Ortiz-Colon said.
Originally, I was just going to drop my son off. But I'm glad I stayed. I got in some dancing. It's been fun, said Stephanie McCumbee, another concertgoer.
Mary Collars revealed that she had the time of her life at the concert. "Thank you Fort Benning for this," she said.
Looking ahead, Siter revealed that the next big event on Fort Benning would be the annual Independence Celebration.
"For the first time ever, we're making it a two-day event. It will be bigger and better than ever, and as always, it's free," she said.
Siter added that the Independence Celebrations features a carnival with vendors on June 24 and a fireworks show on June 25.
