FORT DRUM, N.Y. (May 5, 2016) -- The Department of the Army has named the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade the winner of the Order of Daedalians' Brig. Gen. Carl I. Hutton Memorial Award for their professionalism and immense contribution to the advancement of flight safety in Army Aviation.
According to the Order of Daedalians' official website, the organization's roots go back to World War I. It was created to help preserve the spirit of patriotism, love of country and high ideals of sacrifice that place service to nation above personal safety or position.
In 2015, Soldiers of 10th Combat Aviation Brigade were tasked with the responsibility to provide a responsive and agile aviation global response force capable of accomplishing missions anywhere in the world. That same year, they deployed more than three subordinate units to various locations such as Afghanistan, Korea and multiple combat training center rotations.
Stateside, they were in charge of the installation medical evacuation mission, providing 24-hour / seven-days-a-week helicopter evacuation and medical support for life-threatening injuries sustained during training on the installation.
If that wasn't enough, 10th CAB also was self-reorganizing and restructuring as part of the Army's Aviation Restructuring Initiative, a direct result of the continuing evolution of the national military strategy, the Army Operating Concept, and the changing environment in which the United States will have to conduct its global mission in the future.
Overall, 10th CAB Soldiers conducted more than 17,000 flights hours at home and abroad, completing all training and mission objectives with an impeccable safety record, and no negative aviation safety events in the Class A or B category during the 2015 calendar year.
The Hutton award, which dates back to 1978, is issued annually to a single unit, Armywide, to promote safe military flying practices.
Col. Michael C. McCurry, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade commander, said it is a special honor to be recognized for this award.
"The 10th Combat Aviation Brigade remains ready to deploy and fight in any environment at a moment's notice," he said. "We stay ready by living on 'amber' -- constantly alert; we scan our environment for potential threats, see problems before they happen and intervene. Safety is a big part of maintaining aviation readiness."
The prestigious trophy will be officially presented to the brigade later this year.
