WEST POINT N.Y. (May 10, 2016) -- West Point Garrison and Community hosted the 42nd Annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony at the United States Military Academy Preparatory School on West Point, April 19.

Designated by Presidential Proclamation in 1974, National Volunteer Week is celebrated each April to recognize our nation's volunteers.

Volunteers sustain our Army and help maintain our Army home. West Point has over 1,500 volunteers supporting installation programs and organizations such as Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation, West Point Spouse's Club, Girl and Boy Scouts, American Red Cross, Parent Teacher Organization, Society of the Daughters of the United States Army, West Point Legal Office, Directorate of Cadet Activities and the six West Point Chapels.

U.S. Military Academy at West Point and U.S. Army Garrison West Point leadership recognized West Point's volunteers for their selfless service by presenting Bronze, Silver, Gold and Lifetime Presidential Volunteer Service Awards.

A special Survivor Outreach Services Volunteer award was presented to six surviving families' for their service to West Point's Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation. These volunteers are West Point area residents who have lost a loved one in the defense of our nation.

In 2015, the volunteers at West Point put in an amazing 101,560 hours of personal time which, at $23.07 an hour, comes to a total of $2,342,989.20.

With busy daily schedules, finding the time to volunteer is a selfless act of patriotism that clearly exemplifies the Army Value of "Selfless Service". This year's volunteer theme of "Lifting Spirits, Touching Lives", fit perfectly with the spirit of the West Point volunteer.
