Fort Huachuca, Arizona - Drivers and other visitors to Fort Huachuca may notice a greater number of Soldiers and Civilians cleaning up trash, debris and combustible materials in the cantonment, training and housing areas over the coming weeks -- the annual post-wide cleanup is underway.

According to Master Sgt. David Such, operations officer, Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security, the purpose is to ensure good stewardship of the installation, and properly dispose of debris to maintain and restore Fort Huachuca properties to prescribed standards.

"It's an annual requirement to focus on intense cleanup alongside roads, on the ranges, and ensure the desert is not impacted by training," he said.

The cleanup will be three-pronged.

Soldiers will pay extra attention to the training areas used by their units, removing any overlooked debris that does not belong. They will also eradicate brush that could potentially be a fire hazard. Activity will also focus on the cantonment area which consists of cleaning around government buildings and the surrounding landscape. Additionally, emphasis will be placed on barracks and Family housing.

While commanders and responsible entities will set the dates for cleanup around government buildings and barracks, April 14 and 21 have been set aside for beautification of Family housing areas, Such said. Commanders are encouraged to allow those living in on-post housing to take the time to focus on the cleaning.

Garrison command teams will inspect all areas April 25-29.

Cleanup activity will culminate with a post-wide yard sale 7 a.m.-3 p.m. April 30 in housing areas throughout the installation.

"The intent is for people to get rid of useable items they don't want and keep them out of the landfill," Such said.

He recommends those participating in the annual spring cleanup take advantage of the post-wide yard sale to get rid of things they've cleaned out.

Anyone with post access is welcome to come to the yard sale.
