FORT BENNING, Ga., (April 20, 2016) -- Resumes. Cover letters. Interviews. The road to a new job can be challenging.

The Employment Readiness Program on Fort Benning held a workshop April 14 to assist individuals who are seeking new employment. Phebe Furlow, an Employment Readiness specialist, ran the job strategy workshop.

Attendees were offered job search techniques, tips on dressing for success as well as resume writing and suggestions for the interviewing process.

"I'm getting ready to retire. I came here to get some information that will help me transition into the civilian side of the workforce," said Sgt. 1st Class Novetta Robinson, one of the attendees.

"One of the worst things a person can do is take a job that he or she has absolutely no interest in," Furlow said.

Furlow explained that research is key when choosing a career.

"Educating yourself is important. I suggest attending informational interviews or classes and workshops. The ERP can help with all of that. We sit down and do one-on-one as well," she said.

In addition, Furlow recommended attending career fairs.

"That's a way to get out there and actually see who's hiring. You can network, make contact with people," she said.

She warned attendees about getting too personal on interviews.

It's important to say more than yes or no when being asked a question, but avoid over elaborating, she said.

Furlow also encouraged attendees to be wary of what they're putting on social media and get rid of anything that could be damaging.

The ERP holds a variety of classes to assists individuals. For more information, call the ERP at 706-545-4043.
