Fairbanks, Alaska. (March 30, 2016) -- Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) programs across Alaska were recently recognized by Alaska Governor Bill Walker with an executive proclamation naming April JROTC Month.

In the proclamation, Walker recognized the many benefits JROTC programs bring to Alaska students by teaching them "the ability to act with integrity and personal accountability while leading others to succeed in a diverse and global workforce; to engage in civic and social concerns of the community, government and society; to graduate prepared to excel in post-secondary options and career pathways; to make decisions that promote positive social, emotional, and physical health; and to value the role of the military and other service organizations."

Retired Army Lt. Col. Mark Adams, senior Army instructor for Lathrop High School Army JROTC, said he's proud to be a part of the tradition, history and education JROTC brings to local high school students -- and the proven results he sees in Cadets.

"With Governor Walker making this proclamation, I believe it highlights the dedicated professionals that instruct the various programs across the state and the lifelong impact we have on the Cadets," Adams said. "My program, which is one of many that are found across Alaska, strives daily to "motivate young people to be better citizens" and each student is a unique highlight with their goals varying greatly depending on ability.

"I am very proud of all of my Cadets in all they do; whether it is conducting community service, enlisting in the Alaska National Guard, being accepted into USMA or just graduating with their high school diploma," he added.
