DETROIT ARSENAL (April 7, 2016) -- The Department of the Army Director of the Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) Office, Monique Ferrell, delivered the keynote address as the Detroit Arsenal kicked off the 2016 Sexual Assault Awareness Month April 5. This year's theme is "Sexual Assault. Sexual Harassment. Not in Our Army."

U.S. Army TACOM Life Cycle Management Command (LCMC) Commander Maj. Gen. Gwen Bingham welcomed the Army SHARP director, saying, "We are just delighted to have Ms. Monique Ferrell here to serve as our guest speaker. If you were to read her bio, you will see that she is an accomplished leader. We are here to eradicate sexual harassment, we are standing here to eradicate sexual assault, and we stand here to make sure that we are ambassadors -- so if you see this, you need to nip this in the bud right there."

Four years ago, Ferrell was appointed to the Senior Executive Service. In her capacity as the director of the Army SHARP office, she establishes effective strategies, develops plans, and formulates policies for continued improvement of SHARP programs.

During Ferrell's address at here, she discussed April's designation as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month and how SHARP remains one of the Army's top priorities. Everyone is responsible for creating an environment free of sexual harassment and assault, and intervention facilitates a safe environment free of sexual harassment and assault, she emphasized.

"Today's event represents your resolve to address sexual harassment and sexual assault. Your continued dedication has a direct impact on readiness -- and that's the Army chief of staff's number one priority and he has made that clear to all of us."

During her address, Ferrell showed that ongoing prevention focus areas include male Soldier sexual assault, retaliation, and sexual harassment. She said that significant progress has been made in SHARP, but that more important work needs to be accomplished. She quoted Sgt. Maj. of the Army Daniel Dailey about SHARP as saying, the key to enabling toward sustaining momentum rests with our first-line leaders.

Ferrell concluded her remarks by saying, "I personally thank you for willing to commit to this cause and your efforts to further enhance Soldiers, civilians and the public to eliminate sexual harassment and sexual assault in the Army."
