HEIDELBERG -- As announced today by DoD, all U.S. Army, Europe facilities in Buedingen and Gelnhausen, Germany, will be returned to the host nation in FY08, following the inactivation of the 1-1 Cavalry Squadron in FY07.

Once the unit's personnel are reassigned throughout the Army, the following U.S. sites in Buedingen and Gelnhausen will become excess: Armstrong Barracks, Armstrong Village Family Housing, Buedingen Ammunition Area, Buedingen Army Heliport, and the Tiergarten Training Area in Buedingen, as well as Coleman Village Family Housing in Gelnhausen.

The 1-1 Cavalry Squadron with approximately 620 Soldiers was previously announced for inactivation as part of USAREUR's additional FY07 force structure actions. No civilian personnel are associated with this unit.

Today's announcement of the subsequent closure of the sites in Buedingen and Gelnhausen will also impact 17 Soldiers, 28 U.S. civilian and 16 local national employees associated with local medical and dental clinics, AAFES, DeCA and other garrison support units assigned to the area.

The return of installations is in keeping with the August 2004 Presidential announcement to return forces from Europe to the US and EUCOM's Strategic Theater Transformation plan. Coordination with German officials was conducted prior to this announcement.
