FORT BENNING, Ga., (March 30 2016) -- The Reebok Spartan Race is known as one of the most challenging and innovative obstacle races in the world. Spartan hosts more than 130 races around the globe each year, including the Spartan Sprint, the Super and the Beast. For the first time, Spartan will partner with Fort Benning Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation and the Airborne and Ranger Training Brigade April 16 to introduce a new race, the Spartan Ranger Challenge. It is the first Spartan race held on a military installation, and it's timed to coincide with the annual Best Ranger Competition weekend activities.

The race will take place on Dekkar Strip on 101st Airborne Division Road near Fryar Drop Zone. The Ranger Challenge is a challenging, 3- to 5-mile cross-country race that includes a muddy obstacle course with barbed-wire crawls, rope climbs, spear throws and more, more than 20 obstacles in all.

This race is open to the public and suitable for athletes of all levels, from beginner level to elite competitors. It will include a Varsity Spartan Kids Epic Mile for ages 9-13 and a Jr. Spartan Kids Half Mile for ages 4-8.

The Fort Benning brigade with the greatest participation (based on the percentage of active duty personnel and unit strength as defined by DHR, as of Feb. 1) will win a Spartan Shield and $1,000 in MWR Unit Funds. To qualify, brigade must designate a team captain and choose a team name that includes the brigade name, such as the "198th Infantry Brigade Braves." Team captains must register for the challenge at http://www.spartan.com/en/race/detail/1370/overview, and team members must register individually. Each team will be assigned a starting time.

Dekkar Strip is on the Alabama side of the installation. Participants and guests will not be required to pass through a gate or check point if they access the post from Alabama Highway 165. Parking is free, admission for spectators is $20. The first wave of competitors will start at 7:45am, the last at 3pm.

The cost of participation ranges from $79-$89 with a 20 percent discount with the promo code BENNING at http://www.spartan.com/en/race/detail/1370/overview. Kids' races are only $28. Active duty military, veterans and first responders will receive a 25 percent discount when they register online at GOVX.

Volunteers are needed to help build the race course and obstacles, set up the festival area, make race packets, assist with registration, serve as obstacle "captains," help with the kids' race and tear down everything after the event. Volunteers will receive a free lunch and a t-shirt and a free race entry for a future Spartan race.

To volunteer, go to https://register.chronotrack.com/r/19138. You will receive email notices from Spartan as volunteer shifts become available for this event only. You will also receive a volunteer parking pass, so you don't pay for admission. Confirmation letters will be available after the event for those who track their volunteer hours.
