CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- Brigadier General Stephen E. Farmen, United States Army Joint Munitions Command, Rock Island Arsenal, Rock Island, IL, presented Letterkenny Munitions Center with the Army Superior Unit Award at an outdoor ceremony on Monday, March 28, 2016, held at the Headquarters Building parking lot of the Munitions Center.

During October 1, 2011 to September 30, 2012, the Letterkenny Munitions Center (LEMC) displayed exceptionally meritorious service in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. he Munitions Center supplied America's Warfighters with the right ammunition at the right place, on time, every time and went above and beyond expectation. The success of the mission was accomplished by the management at Joint Munitions Command Headquarters, Rock Island, Illinois, through the network of ammunition installations accomplishing ammunition production, storage, supply, maintenance, demilitarization and training. The unit's personnel around the nation were untiring in their dynamic efforts to continually improve support to the Warfighter and the information requirement of their leadership. Through their accomplishments the units enable success through the missions of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation New Dawn in Afghanistan and Iraq and demonstrated an unfailing determination to stand in support of those in harm's way. The United States Army Joint Munitions Command's performance of duty is in keeping with the finest of traditions of military service.

The Army Superior Unit Award was established by the Secretary of the Army in the 1980s to recognize outstanding meritorious performance of a unit during peacetime for difficult and challenging missions under extraordinary circumstances. Circumstances may be deemed to be extraordinary when they do not represent the typical day-to-day circumstances under which the unit normally performs, or may reasonably be expected to perform during its peacetime mission. The unit must display outstanding devotion and superior performance of exceptionally difficult tasks to distinguish it apart from and above other units with like missions.

"Receiving the Army Superior Unit Award is a great honor for LEMC. It recognizes the great people here for their direct contribution to combat operations in Afghanistan. What's more, is that it shows the contributions of Joint Munitions Command as a whole and we were honored to have BG Farmen present LEMC this award today," said Lieutenant Colonel Trenton J. Conner, Commander at the Munitions Center.
