WIESBADEN, Germany -- Multiple U.S. Army Europe units and individuals are being recognized by the Army engineer community for their outstanding dedication and professionalism.

The U.S. Army Europe-level awardees are representing the region at the Department of the Army-level awards, expected to be announced in late March.

Each year, the Society of American Military Engineers and the Army Engineer Association sponsor awards to recognize the most outstanding contributions from the U.S. Army engineer community.

U.S. Army Europe selected nominees representing the following award categories: the Itschner Award, the Outstanding Engineer Platoon Leader Award, the Sturgis Medal, the Van Autreve Award and the Outstanding Civilian Award.

The winners are as follows:

Representing U.S. Army Europe for the 2015 Itschner Award: Alpha Company, 54th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 173rd Airborne Brigade. The Itschner Award, named in honor of Lt. Gen. Emerson C. Itschner, a former chief of engineers, is presented to the most outstanding engineer company in each Army component.

Representing U.S. Army Europe for the 2015 Outstanding Engineer Platoon Leader Award: 1st Lt. Elizabeth Likins-Smith, 500th Engineer Company, 15th Engineer Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade. The Outstanding Engineer Platoon Leader Award is awarded to an engineer lieutenant platoon leader in recognition of outstanding contributions to military engineering by demonstrated technical and leadership ability.

Representing U.S. Army Europe for the 2015 Sturgis Medal: Sgt. 1st Class Karlmark Yepez, Alpha Company, 54th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 173rd Airborne Brigade. The Sturgis Medal, named in honor of Lt. Gen. Samuel D. Sturgis, a former chief of engineers, is awarded to an engineer noncommissioned officer, E-5 through E-7, in recognition of outstanding contributions to military engineering by demonstrated technical and leadership abilities.

Representing U.S. Army Europe for the 2015 Van Autreve Award: Sgt. Sean Foley, 902nd Engineer Company, 15th Engineer Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade. The Van Autreve Award, named in honor of former Sgt. Maj. of the Army Leon L. Van Autreve, recognizes engineer junior enlisted Soldiers, E-1 through E-4, for their outstanding contributions to military engineering by demonstrating outstanding engineer Soldier skills.

Representing U.S. Army Europe for the 2015 Outstanding Civilian of the Year Award: Nicholas Kaechler, U.S. Army Europe. The Outstanding Civilian Award is awarded annually to one outstanding civilian in recognition of outstanding contributions and support to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the regiment, to include civil work, humanitarian and community achievements.
