FORT BENNING, Ga., (March 23 2016) -- Everyone who works or lives on Fort Benning should start making plans to participate in the postwide spring cleanup scheduled April 13-28.

"It is a time blocked off for the units to go and clean up their areas of responsibility. Each unit is responsible for an immediate area," explained Garrison Command Sgt. Major Kevin Floyd.

Over time various training and building materials can pile up at the different sites, Floyd said.

Those living in the housing areas are expected to participate in the cleanup as well.

"They have access to the recycling receptacles. There are also two dumpsters for bulk materials. One is located on Sante Fe Road and another is on Vibbert Avenue," said Floyd.

Units and people living in housing can dispose of their bulk materials at the Material Recovery Facility.

"It's our installation's recycling facility. Items such as wood pallets, metal, and plastic can be taken there. It is located on Jamestown Road in building 4232.

Soldiers who live in the barracks have a part in this as well, explained Floyd.

The Troop Self-Help store is a resource available to units and Soldiers who are looking for supplies to aid them with the cleanup.

"The Troop Self-Help is a facility that a lot of Soldiers don't know about. It is located in Building 69 on Wold Avenue. It is run by Bobby McGill, a retired paratrooper," said Floyd.

At the Troop Self-Help store, Soldiers can sign out mowers, trimmers, or any lawn care equipment that is needed. They can also obtain items such as light bulbs and paint to fix up their unit areas, offices or bedrooms and all at no cost. In order to use this facility, units and Soldiers must have a signature card and have taken a class, said Floyd.

"I offer two classes a month. In order to sign up for a class, Soldiers must contact me prior to that class at 706-545-8373," said McGill.

"My operating hours are Monday thru Friday 8 a.m. to 4: 30 p.m. I'm open on training holidays, but closed for national holidays," he continued.

Floyd also stressed the importance of not forgetting about the cleanup.

"It's important. Without Fort Benning, we cannot train. We need all of the facilities here on Fort Benning to train. It's our job to take care of what we own. I like to say that you've got the Soldier's creed and the Ranger's creed. And in both they talk about the care of equipment. Fort Benning is the largest gated community in the Phenix City and Columbus area. In my opinion, it's their best-gated community, and we should treat as such," he said.

There will be another postwide cleanup in the fall. The dates have yet to be determined.
