FORT BENNING, Ga., (March 9 2016) -- Columbus firefighters, a Columbus Symphony Orchestra member, and an engineer are just a few of the career presenters who will appear at Dexter Elementary Career Day on March 15.
Those unable to attend in-person can do so via Google hangouts.
Principal Edwina Smith along with Dexter's Partner in Education coordinator, Dalma Bogan, organized the event. Dexter's Educational Technologist, Sarah Showalter, will be responsible for moderating the Google hangouts.
Smith and Bogan have been planning the event since mid-January.
There will be a variety of other presenters including representatives from NASA and a Barnes and Noble Representative.
Looking ahead, Smith revealed that in April the students would be engaging in activities that raise autism awareness.
"We have a autism program here. It's new to Dexter. We have three autism classrooms. We want to recognize diversity among our students," she explained.
As the only school in Fort Benning with a hearing-impaired teacher, Dexter Elementary has begun a Sign Language Club to also show students the importance of accepting diversity and educating themselves, Smith revealed.
"During our student-led morning broadcast, we do the pledge verbally and using sign language," said Smith.
On April 8, Dexter Elementary will have some of its students participate in the Fort Benning Field Day for Tri-Community Exceptional Children. With the help of L. Morris, the school's Military Life and Family consultant, Dexter Elementary will also celebrate military children in April, as it is the "Month of the Military Child."
This year at Dexter Elementary an after-school fitness program has also been implemented for the first time.
"There's a tennis clinic that the kids participate in twice a week," explained Bogan.
As a result of the clinic, Dexter Elementary has formed a tennis team that now competes against other schools in Columbus. Bogan serves as the team's coach.
"This is the first time an elementary school tennis team has gone out and competed like this," she added.
In an effort to further encourage physical fitness, students at Dexter Elementary engage in monthly walks. Students walk laps around the school and usually sponsor something in the process. In the past, they have done the monthly walks to collect items for homeless veterans and the poor, said Bogan.
