FORT BENNING, Ga., (March 9 2016) -- In 1948, more than 3,000 guests from across the Chattahoochee Valley attended the annual Easter Sunrise Service at the Campbell King Horse Show Bowl on Fort Benning's Main Post. A thousand Soldiers were seated on the field, forming the shape of a cross.

The bowl, named for Brig. Gen. Campbell King, the post commandant who did the most to promote horsemanship and post beautification during his tenure from 1929-1933, had two rings set in an amphitheater surrounded by shade trees. It was connected by horse trails along the river to the horse stables on Marne Road.

The horse bowl, located on the northwestern edge of Main Post near the Chattahoochee River, was primarily used for horse shows and polo matches, but it was also the site of many concerts and Easter Sunrise services, attracting as many as 10,000 people throughout the 30s, 40s and 50s.

This year, the annual Easter Sunrise Service will be at 7 a.m. March 27 on the Field of the Four Chaplains next to The Infantry Center Chapel at the intersection of Sigerfoos and Wold.

Another upcoming event is the annual Spring Eggstravaganza from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 19 on the CYSS Sports Field (Blue Field) on Zuckerman Avenue. This free Family event includes egg hunts for ages 18 months to 11 years old, games, face painting, crafts and prizes. The Easter Bunny will sit for pictures. For more information, call 706-545-1853. If the weather is foul, this event will be rescheduled for March 20.
