CAMP ZAMA, Japan -- On Feb. 23, 2016, as part of Nurse Grand Rounds, nursing staff members from Brig. Gen. Crawford Sams U.S. Army Health Clinic (a.k.a. MEDDAC-Japan) gathered to discuss the peer reviewed article: Factors Influencing Parental Decision Making When Parents Choose to Deviate From the Standard Pediatric Immunization Schedule, (M. Whyte, J. Whyte IV, Eccles [JCHN], 2011).

Nurse Grand Rounds is a quarterly forum designed to support skill building for staff members as a part of the Patient Caring Touch System.

Col. Susan Argueta, Deputy Commander for Nursing and Ms. Jacklynn Graham, Staff Registered Nurse, led the meeting in which staff members discussed experiences dealing with immunizing children at Camp Zama, strategies to better educate community members on the importance of immunizations, as well as strategies to address some of the article's researched questions such as:

1. Which immunizations are cited by parents as primary factors affecting their decision to refrain from adhering to standard immunizations for their children?

2. What are the specific fears of immunization and perceived benefits of avoiding immunization among parents who choose to refrain from the standard schedule of immunizations?

3. On what sources of information do parents base their decision to refrain from the standard schedule of immunization?
