REDSTONE ARSENAL, Alabama -- One U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command Soldier was recognized for what he does on a daily basis in the community.

Sgt. 1st Class Martinis Butler, USASMDC/ARSTRAT Equal Opportunity adviser, was recognized at the 14th Annual Black History Enrichment and Enlightenment Festival by Rosie's International Services, Inc. during a ceremony Feb. 13.

"This is a great privilege and honor," Butler said. "It is a blessing to be able to give back to the community. It was something I wasn't expecting, and it goes to show that hard work does pay off."

Butler received the award for his excellence in honoring Soldiers, families and the community. He is involved in multiple community outreach programs and assists in coaching youth soccer.

"It is always great to be able to give back, but it is also an opportunity to represent SMDC as an Equal Opportunity advisor and ensure people are treated with respect and dignity," Butler said.

Butler was recently selected to perform the Christmas tree lighting at the Huntsville Madison County Public Library where the ornaments honoring military and family members who are serving near and far are placed.

"This makes me want to step up and do more," Butler said. "When you think you have arrived and you think you have done enough, you look over your shoulder and you realize you have not done enough because you can always help someone else.

"This makes me want to give back to others so they can be the person standing here next time," he added.

The purpose of Rosie's International Services, Inc., is to provide local youth with leadership expertise, motivational skills and insights into the world of business and economic development. The organization's mission is to expose children to foreign languages and offer tutoring services in the subjects of reading, math, science, social studies and Spanish.

"To be selected among all of the other great EO advisers on Redstone Arsenal is a great honor," Butler said. "I just hope I can be a blessing and impact the lives of others and hopefully continue to make a difference."
