FORT BENNING, Ga., (Feb. 24, 2016) -- Stowers and Loyd Elementary School students made a strong showing in the HOTLanta Open Sport Stacking, or cup stacking, Championship Feb. 13.
The event was hosted by World Sport Stacking Association and took place at Summerour Middle School in Norcross, Georgia.
All of the students qualified in the tournament's preliminary round and made it to the championship round, said Adam Weinbaum, Stowers Elementary School Physical Education teacher.
Students competed against eight other schools from across Georgia.
The following students from Stowers and one Loyd student, Ana Escobar, participated in the competition:
AGE GROUP 7-8
Alexis Ellertson - second place in individual 3-3-3, third place in team relay
Madison Petruna - third place individual 3-3-3, 3-6-3, and cycle
Tara Riggan - She qualified for the championship round.
Amy Thompson - third place team relay.
Justin Thompson - third place team relay.
AGE GROUP 9-10
Henrietta Cooper - third place team relay.
Lexington Cooper- second place team relay.
Logan Daughtrey - second place team relay.
Robert Ellertson - second place team relay
Ana Escobar - second place team relay
Anthony Mikovich - second place team relay.
Weinbaum said all the students excelled at the tournament.
"Everyone made it to the preliminaries ... it was a good experience," he said. "Team USA was also there, allowing for kids to compete and qualify for their team."
Weinbaum said cup stacking is fun for all kids of all ages, and you don't have to be the best athlete to participate in the sport.
"It's something that anyone can do, that is what is so good about it," Weinbaum said. "Anyone can do it and have fun. No specific qualifications are needed like in other sports, like having a particular height to be a basketball player.
"Once they learn the basics of 3-3-3, 3-6-3 and cycle, it really builds their confidence up, and then once they learn the different patterns I encourage them to work on their speed," he said. "It just really builds their confidence up."
"It helps their hand-eye coordination too," added Debbie Parks, Stowers Elementary School principal.
Weinbaum said Pam Koon, who was a Physical Education teacher at Dexter Elementary School, introduced Sport Stacking at Fort Benning in 1999. He hopes to host a tournament in the area in the future.
