CARLISLE BARRACKS, Pa. -- Army Materiel Command's Commander Gen. Dennis L. Via offered insights of leadership, drawing from his own experiences and those learned from peers to Army War College students during his visit Feb. 16.

"I developed my own leadership philosophy when I was a young captain, and while my philosophy has evolved over the years, the basic leadership insights I observed then remain true today," said Via, who graduated from the Army War College in 1999.

Via spoke about the process of reflecting back on personal leadership skills, providing influence that creates a positive environment, and feedback that sets the tone to Soldiers within an organization.

He noted that professional reputations matter and leaders need to build relationships during their career.

"The people you sit with today may be in your lives for years to come. Keep in touch, help each other and learn from one another," he said.

Via touched on the significance of Army values of character, loyalty, integrity and trust and how some people that thought they never would lose their values, have. He told the students to be mindful of situations and to set high standards for themselves and the organizations they will lead.

He stressed the importance of balancing work and family, and that the only way to teach those around him of the importance of balance was to set the example.
