FORT GORDON, Ga. (Feb. 19, 2016) - The second annual Dr. Seuss on the Loose 10K, 5K Run and 1-Mile Stroller Walk drew more than 500 runners and walkers to Fort Gordon Feb. 13.
"This is the first time I have participated in the Fort Gordon Run series," said Jennifer Townsend.
Towsend, a native of Gilbert, South Carolina, said she would be back for other fun runs.
"I plan on registering for the upcoming St. Patrick's event because I enjoyed the walk. It was worth the drive here," she said.
Many of the participants dressed up as their favorite Dr. Seuss character. Melissa Burney, dressed as " Thing 1," sporting blue hair, brought her miniature English Bulldog Parker, who stepped lively at the start of the walk.
As Burney crossed the finish line, she was still wearing a smile, but Parker looked a little weary in her arms.
Several drill sergeants from Fort Jackson, South Carolina, came out to administer a quick test of endurance for participants willing to see how many push-ups and crunches they could perform either before or following the race.
All registered participants received a race medallion and the first 500 pre-registered received an event T-shirt.
In the 10K race, Jeremy Frizzell placed first with a time of 36 minutes, 24 seconds.
Samuel Woo earned second place, 36:32; and Joseph Cerrullo took third place, 36:54.
Morgan Defalco placed first in the top three females category, time: 41:16.
Caitlin Payne finished second, 41:56; and Madison Defalco earned third place, 43:24.
In the 5K race, Christopher Jacobs finished first in the top three males overall category with a time of 19:34.5.
Joseph Nichols placed second, 19:51.2; and Der rick Weisfeld earned third place, 20.29.8.
Kathleen Oramas earned first place in the top three females overall category in the 5K race, 21:37.2.
Connie Manning placed second overall, 25:32.6; and Kristin Field finished third, 25:18.8.
The Fort Gordon Run Series hosts themed runs and stroller walks throughout the year.
The next event, the St. Patrick's Day Shuffle, kicks off at 9 a.m. March 12 at Rice Road near Barton Field.
According to Smith, there will also be a Geo-cache styled leprechaun treasure hunt for families and beginner geo-cachers in the 1-mile walk event.
The 5K timed fun trail will be orientated through the Fort Gordon Double Eagle Disc Golf Course.
The first 500 to pre-register will receive a free T-shirt, but you must be present at the event to pick it up.
There is no fee to participate, and the event is open to everyone.
